Sleep

Women experience sleep differently than men.

In general, women appear to report a greater need for sleep and more subjective complaints of non-refreshing sleep than men.[1]

Different phases of women’s life (like pregnancy, being a new mum, having menstruation, menopause) increase the possibility to have a sleep disturbance.

You can suffer because of:

  • Poor sleep quality
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Sleep disorders like insomnia, restless legs syndrome,….
Women experience sleep differently than men.

When duration of sleep drops below 7 hours, and especially when it starts to move toward six and half hours or less, a number of different disorders begin to increase in prevalence[2]

Sleep loss (less than 7 hours per night) may have wide-ranging effects on the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems, including the following:

  • Obesity in adults and children
  • Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance
  • Cardiovascular disease and hypertension
  • Anxiety symptoms
  • Depressed mood
  • Alcohol use.[3]

There is extensive scientific evidence linking sleep restriction to weight gain and obesity.[4]

Recommendation:

Be proactive in taking care of your sleep – your health depends on it.

Are you feeling like you are in a round where causes and consequences are so connected and melted one with the other that you can’t grip just one and fix it? Can’t take care of your problems alone?

Consult a doctor.

Find a support group/individual/s.

The most important: Find your inner strength, so you can help yourself.
