Violence against women
Violence against women – particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence – is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.
Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Most of this violence is intimate partner violence.
The prevalence estimates of lifetime intimate partner violence to be at 22% in high-income countries and Europe and 25% in the WHO Regions of the Americas.
Globally as many as 38% of all murders of women are committed by intimate partners.
Violence can negatively affect women’s physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health.
